Guests are cordially invited to Pavlina Vagioni’s “Gorgon” at The Carillon Gallery at Tarrant County College, South Campus. Vagioni explores mythological and contemporary treatments of protection and fear in this enigmatic and multi-media exploration of Medusa: a Gorgon in Greek mythology whose story was told and retold differently over time as a result of social and gender dynamics tied to prejudice and fear. Visitors to the exhibition opening will have the chance to learn more about this dynamic mythical deity from the artist herself. Similarly the Carillon Gallery Director, Joshua Goode, reflects, “I am inspired by how Pavlina blurs the lines between painting and sculpture and interweaves them seamlessly into an overall visceral experience.”
With wall-mounted sculptural snakes, heads sculpted using a 3D print capture of the artist’s own hands, alongside marble floor mount sculpture and rounded sculptural wall artwork all curvilinear in shape and evocative of the Gorgons’ iconic snake hair, the artist invites guests to ruminate not only on the ancient themes tied to the Medusa but also contemporary expressions where things appear differently from their actual nature: social media, artificial intelligence and historical revisionism all offer instances of a marked disparity between truth and appearance. In addition, the venue itself provides a valuable context for this generative exhibition. As Vagioni notes, “the Carillon is an educational space and therefore a unique opportunity for my work to reach a new audience like students and academics alike.”
On view through February 22nd, 2024, guests to “Gorgon” encounter the origins of Ancient Greek myth, all the while finding distinct parallels between our contemporary lived experiences and the interplay between reality and illusion, fear and transcendence.
