DESCRIPTION:

A site-specific proposal for the Main Street window of the ION Building space in Houston, TX. It embraces fluidity and invites generative discourse as visitors contemplate water as a space for leisure, labor, and exploration.

Countless ancient cultures associate oceans with ideas of birth, the womb, and generative, life-giving spaces. In addition, seas, oceans, and other bodies of water are spaces where trade and exchange occur. The area where Texas currently stands today was itself an inland sea for millennia. Passersby will journey from the Mediterranean to the Gulf of Mexico through a kinetic light installation unfolding in the three Main St. windows. The installation aims to capture water’s power to forge connections and its significance as a purifying element in spiritual practices. At the same time, the accentuated curved surface acknowledges water’s destructive capacity, as seen in natural calamities like hurricanes and floods that affect Texans and global populations alike. The work overall is an invitation to reflect on the enigmatic power of water.
