“Precious” triptych (detail), 2019, mixed media on canvas, 32×55 inches each panel.
Can an artwork exist without a pair of eyes looking at it, reading it or a pair of ears hearing it? For me, Art is always about the Other. I usually have someone in mind when I create. I consider the artwork as an offering, a votive to that person. A means of touching but not through a hug, a caress or a kiss. Through imagination. It is even more fulfilling when I manage to strike a chord in more than one person. Because at the end of the day, the reward is the emotion that is triggered. And it is through emotions that I can connect with the world. I am thinking about artists like Giorgio Morandi and Joseph Cornell, who lived almost in isolation. Yet, their works possess an almost magical magnetism and sensitivity. Physical distance is irrelevant to closeness. The artist creates in isolation, silently, devotedly, but there is no loneliness. You are immersed in your thoughts and feelings. The final work is your tacit embrace to the others.
