What if you only had six months to live? This is the question I ask whenever I have to make an important decision. It took me a long time to figure out such a simple decision-making process. The reason I am writing this is that I spent a few days in Samothrace this summer. The island is world-famous for two things: The first one is the Winged Victory of Samothrace (now in the Louvre Museum in Paris). The second one is the Cabirian Mysteries that occurred there in antiquity. The archaeological site is beautiful and vast. But what were the Mysteries about? I read that nowhere in the entire Ancient Greek literature, a correlation exists between the Cabirian Mysteries and teachings about reincarnation or the immortality of the soul. The ancient Greeks didn’t care that much about the Afterlife. How noble and brave it is to live without believing in the existence of a compensative heaven. Maybe the Mysteries were about understanding the magnificence of Time. The most valuable thing we get to have. Do we waste it or utilize it?
